Today my parents celebrate their 49th Wedding Anniversary. Mom and Dad met in person only two weeks prior to getting married in a Church - although they had already married on 10 Dec (six months earlier) by proxy in the Comune of Malito. My father's brother, Rocco stood in for him.
My parents marriage was not an arranged one - they fell in love through pictures. My mother would often write to her Aunt here in Canada and my father worked for my Uncle. One day he saw her picture and asked if he could write to her. My Aunt agreed and so the love story began. Within months my mother visited my father's family in his hometown of Locri and not long after they married by proxy and mom made her way to Canada aboard the Saturnia to Pier 21 in Halifax where my father waited for her. They took the train to Toronto where my mother went directly to her Aunt's house and my father to his brother's house. Two weeks later they married in the local church.
My parents will be celebrating their 50th anniversary by taking a trip to Italy. Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!
