In Memory Ernesto Salvati

Ernesto Salvati
1908 - 1975

Today marks the 37th anniversary date of the death of my maternal grand father, Ernesto Salvati who was the son of Emilio Francesco and Francesca Raffaella Napolitano. He was born 6 Jun 1908 in Malito, Cosenza, Italy and died on 8 Jan 1975 in Yonkers, Westchester County , New York. On 16 Feb 1930 he married Erminia Polito in Malito. [1]

In WW2 he fought for Italy and was captured. He was held as a POW, in Tunisia for several years. At that time his family was not aware he had been captured and were uncertain as to whether or not he was alive. He was later released and returned to his family.

He and my grand mother had 3 living children and a premature child who died shortly after birth. In the early 1960's they moved to Yonkers where they worked and lived until their deaths in the mid 1970's. Erminia died first in Oct 1974 and Ernesto died 3 months later from a terminal brain tumor which he had been diagnoised with a year earlier.

At the time of their deaths, they had 12 grandchildren (one who passed as
an infant) and 1 great grandchild. They are buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. [2]

The picture on the right was taken in the winter of 2011 and sent to me by a cousin.

More about Ernesto and his ancestors can be seen on my Napolitano pages on Gente.
